A few specific examples of how the PACSonWEB healthcare professional portal is now used:

1. The automatic provision of medical imaging studies to outside referring physicians.

How does it work? Studies are automatically provided to physicians, according to a specific filtering process if needed, and a connection between the (national) ID of the referring physician (or the physician in copy) and his account. The studies are displayed in the consolidated view available to the physician. Should the referring physician so request, he may make the studies available to colleagues within the same group practice.

2. The provision on request of medical imaging studies to an outside healthcare professional instead of making a CD, DVD or X-ray film.

How does it work? The sender (application manager, secretarial office, radiologist) uses the PACSonWEB interface to select the studies he wishes to make available to outside healthcare professionals and share these studies subject to the patient's approval. The studies are displayed in the form of a consolidated view available for this user. If the recipient does not have an account, the person can login with a combination of codes and a one-time-password.

3. Seeking a second opinion from an outside physician.

How does it work? The radiologist shares a study with a colleague from his local PACS via URL integration with the PACSonWEB sharing box. The radiologist chooses the recipient and writes a message. He may ask for a read receipt message to be sent. The other physician receives an e-mail notification and the study may be consulted through his account.

4. Sending a notification to the referring physician should something unexpected or urgent be discovered, so the applicant has to be informed immediately about the relevant findings.

How does it work? The radiologist sends a notification from his local PACS via URL integration with the PACSonWEB sharing box. He chooses the recipient, selects the type of message (urgent, unexpected finding) and enters a message. He may ask for a read receipt message to be sent. The other physician receives an e-mail notification and can read the report and view the images straight away.
